Dr. Larry Brilliant received the UCLA Medal on Monday, March 3, for his landmark contributions to public health and his deep commitment to making the world a healthier and better place. From the left are Chancellor Gene Block, Dr. Brilliant, his wife Girija and Dean Jody Heymann of the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health. The medal, the university's highest honor, was presented to him by Chancellor Block at a celebration held at the Chancellor's Residence. Dr. Brilliant was the youngest member of the World Health Organization’s team that led the successful eradication of smallpox. He also founded the Seva Foundation whose leaders have returned sight to millions of people suffering from curable and preventable blindness. He currently serves as president and CEO of the Skoll Global Threats Fund, working to combat global public health challenges, including climate change, water security and pandemics. The medal is bestowed on those of exceptionally distinguished academic and professional achievement whose work or contributions to society illustrate the highest ideals of UCLA.
