(EINPresswire via NewMediaWire) - March 20, 2014 - California Lawyers for the Arts is presenting a unique program in France, "Lights on Paris: Intellectual Property and Cultural Policies in the Digital Age," which will be held at the law firm of Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe in Paris. Participants will receive timely updates on royalties collections, intellectual property practice, and cultural policies that support and protect creativity in the global marketplace of ideas. Speakers include representatives of leading agencies that protect artists' royalties, as well as attorneys who practice in the disciplines of copyright, trademark and patents on behalf of private clients and companies, including Novartis, Hermès International, and Google. See the full speaker line-up and biographies HERE.Eric George of Los Angeles, who is pursuing resale royalties on behalf of artists and artists' estates against Sotheby's and Christie's auction houses, will be discussing the current state of litigation involving the California Resale Royalty Act. He is currently pursuing an appeal from a lower court ruling that declared that the law was unconstitutional. This state law, which is unique in the United States, mandates that artists must receive 5% of the resale price if a unique work of visual art is resold for more than $1,000.
Erik Barnett, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Deputy Director for European Affairs, National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center, (Brussels) will speak about U.S. law enforcement actions against counterfeit goods and pirated material, as well as the repatriation of cultural heritage items smuggled into the United States.

Alma Robinson, who is the Executive Director of California Lawyers for the Arts, said that this trip will provide European and American lawyers opportunities to exchange strategies and opinions about diverse topics, including Google's digitization of art and books and current trends in international enforcement of intellectual property rights, as well as changes in royalties collections and trademark protection underway in Europe. Participants are also invited to register for individual seminars, which are scheduled from 9:30 through 4 pm or 5:30 pm on three days: Monday, March 31, Tuesday, April 1 and Thursday, April 3. The seminar fee of €125 Euros includes a light breakfast, lunch and refreshments. The price for the full program is €500. In addition, Moët Hennessy is offering participants a special tour of their vineyards and facilities at Cognac on Friday, April 4. The price for this optional day trip is €125.
