UCLA Department of Design | Media Arts announces events for fall 2013

The UCLA Department of Design | Media Arts (DMA) is offering a variety of events for the public's enjoyment this fall, including exhibitions and lectures.         
 
For events at the UCLA Broad Art Center's New Wight Gallery (Room 1100), EDA facility (Room 1250) or Game Lab (Room 3252), all-day parking ($12) and short-term parking (payable at pay stations) are available in Lot 3 (enter campus at Hilgard Avenue and Wyton Drive). All-day parking ($12) for events at the California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI) is available in Lot 9 (enter campus at the intersection of Manning Avenue or Le Conte Avenue with Hilgard Avenue, or at the intersection of Westwood and Wilshire boulevards).

This group exhibition features works by UCLA Design | Media Arts M.F.A. graduate students Refik Anadol, Jaehyuck Bae, Matthias Doerfelt, Gavin Halm, Amy Huestis, Su Hyun Kim, Peter Rand, Tyler Stefanich and Curtis Tamm.

Willem Henri Lucas

Lucas is the chair of the UCLA Department of Design | Media Arts. Primarily a book designer (exploring sensibility of printed matter, in material as well as content), he is interested in addressing social issues and bringing design back "to the street," and "humanity" back into design, encouraging future designers to be a valuable part of their communities.

Deitch is an American art dealer, curator and past director of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA).

Peter Lunenfeld
EDA (Room 1250), Broad Art Center 
 
Lunenfeld is a UCLA Design | Media Arts professor and the recipient of the 2013 Dorothy Lee Award for Outstanding Scholarship in the Ecology of Culture. His research interests include media philosophy, art history, design theory and the digital humanities. His books include "The Secret War Between Downloading and Uploading: Tales of the Computer as Culture Machine" (MIT, 2011), "USER: InfoTechnoDemo" (MIT, 2005) and "Snap to Grid: A User's Guide to Digital Arts, Media, and Cultures" (MIT, 2000).

Victoria Vesna

Vesna is a world-renowned media artist, UCLA Design | Media Arts professor and director of the UCLA Art|Sci Center + Lab. She is commissioned as one of three lead artists for this year's "Glow" event in Santa Monica. Together with her team, she is developing the Octopus Mandala Glow project for the famous Pacific Wheel — the only solar-powered wheel in the world. Vesna is known for her collaborations with scientists and her work with media for many years, with a focus on interactive artworks that immerse the audience and put them in the center of the work.

Animal Charm (Rich Bott and Jim Fetterley)

Inspired by the early media collages of Bruce Conner and Craig Baldwin, Animal Charm — a collaboration between Richard Bott and Jimm Fetterley — began using found VHS tapes to make video collages in 1995.
