While spending on higher education research and development in all fields remained flat for fiscal year 2012-13, UCLA investigators ended the year with the eighth highest total of research expenditures among the 30 top-performing research institutions that reported receiving the largest R&D expenditures in all fields in the last fiscal year, according to a report by the National Science Foundation.

UCLA researchers logged research expenditures of $1.003 billion, according to the NSF. It was one of eight research universities to be included in the “billion-dollar club.” And it is the highest amount for UCLA researchers in the university’s history. In addition to UCLA’s extramural research expenditures of $938.6 million in 2012, the NSF numbers include institutionally funded research expenditures, among them, direct campus funding, cost sharing and indirect cost under-recoveries.

The NSF report is available here.
