The UCLA Department of Music is offering a variety of events for the public's enjoyment this winter. Programs include faculty and student recitals and performances of high artistic accomplishment in various genres, as well as visiting artists of national and international renown.

The UCLA Philharmonia presents its ninth annual "All-Star" Concert, an evening of concerto performances featuring UCLA's finest student soloists. The program includes Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35 (first movement); Debussy's Première Rhapsodie for Clarinet; Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 1 in E flat major; Prokofiev's Sinfonia Concertante for Cello and Orchestra (second movement); Séjourné's Concerto for Marimba (first movement); Ibert's Concerto for Flute (third movement); Peskin's Concerto for Trumpet (first movement); and Kraft's Concerto No. 1 for Timpani (third movement). The performance features Camille Miller on violin, Kenji Bellavigna on clarinet, Minh Nguyen on piano, Luke Kim on cello, Matt Sumida on marimba, Michelle Huang on flute, Tristan Hurd on trumpet and Nik Keelaghan on timpani.

'Celebrating Tigran Mansurian': Inaugural concert of the Armenian Music Series

The inaugural concert of the Armenian Music Series at UCLA celebrates the 75th birthday anniversary of Armenia's foremost composer, Tigran Mansurian, with the performance of his choral masterpiece, "Ars Poetica", and chamber music works by Mirzoyan and Spendiaryan. Works will be performed by the Lark Musical Society Choir, Vatsche Barsoumian (conductor), Vanessa Vasquez (soprano) and the VEM String Quartet.

UCLA Wind Ensemble: 'Old Wine in New Bottles'

Every work on the program looks at old music in a new way. Young American composer Brian Balmages quotes from Giovanni Gabrieli and Ottorinio Respighi in his "Fanfare Canzonique" for large brass ensemble. Tylman Susato's "Selections From The Danserye" (arr. Patrick Dunnigan) brings a quintessential collection of Renaissance music to the modern wind ensemble. Ron Nelson pays ringing homage to 13-century church composer Perotin the Great with "Homage to Perotin." A creative transcription of Johann Sebastian Bach's "My Jesus! Oh, What Anguish" (arr. Alfred Reed) sets up another resounding work that celebrates the music of Bach: Grammy Award—winner Michael Daugherty's "Bells for Stokowski."

An exciting new production of Mozart's masterpiece sets the Don's adventures and misadventures in contemporary Monte Carlo. Mozart's neverending stream of melodic and dramatic inspiration serves the eternal story of opera's emblematic bad boy. (At all four performances, 50 tickets will be distributed free of charge to seniors over 62 and to any students with ID one hour before curtain, thanks to a generous grant from the Maxwell H. Gluck Foundation.)

UCLA Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band: 'Shades of Blue'

The UCLA Symphonic Band opens the program with a selection of concert band favorites. A California theme runs through the program, which also features UCLA faculty member Jonathan Davis soloing on Pultizer Prize–winning composer Jennifer Higdon's Oboe Concerto. The program opens with another Pultizer Prize–winning composer, Karel Husa, whose "Smetana Fanfare" was commissioned originally by the San Diego State University Wind Ensemble. UCLA doctoral composition student Daniel French recently wrote "The Descending Blue," while USC faculty member Frank Ticheli's "Blue Shades," commissioned by a consortium that included the UCLA Wind Ensemble, has already become part of the wind ensemble canon.
