Construction is progressing at the City of Carlsbad’s new aquatic center at Alga Norte Community Park, on the corner of Alicante Road and Poinsettia Lane. Workers have begun laying the bright blue tile around the edges of the pool, constructing the buildings for locker rooms and concession areas, and have shaped the ball parks and skate park. As the park continues to unfold, energy efficient technologies and colorful art elements will be woven into the construction phase.
The 32-acre community park, scheduled to open in late 2013, will feature activities for all ages. The new aquatic center will offer swimming lessons year round, water aerobics and diving classes, as well as expanded space for recreational and lap swimming. A new dog park will feature dog training and dog agility classes, and the city will host camps and clinics at the new skate park.
The park’s main features include:
- An aquatic center with a 56-meter competition pool, a 25-yard 12-lane instruction pool and a small warm water spa
- A sprayground for young children
- Off-leash dog park with areas for large and small dogs and a dog training area
- A lighted skate park for beginner and experienced skateboarders
- A playground with shade structures over the play equipment
- One lighted full basketball court and one half basketball court
- Three lighted multi-purpose ball fields with a concession stand
- Shaded picnic areas with barbeques
As the construction continues, energy efficient technologies and colorful art elements will be added. To watch the park’s progress, visit the “construction cams” on the city’s website or walk by and take a peek through specially designed “port holes” along the fence line, at adult and kid heights.
